Add programs to autostart in Ubuntu

This is rather popular question among people who switched to Ubuntu recently or who just take the first steps in this operating system: How to add certain program to autostart or startup? Thankfully in latest versions of Ubuntu (e.g. Lucid Lynx or Maverik Meerkat) the answer is really simple.

1. Go to System –> Preferences –> Startup Applications, you will see something like this dialog window:

ubuntu startup applications preferences

2. Go to Ubuntu menu keeping this dialog opened and drag-n-drop necessary application to Startup Application Preferences. In our example I’ve added Banshee media player to startup:

startup application spreferences banshee

3. Press Close button and that’s it! Now every time Ubuntu boots it will also open the application you just added.

thanks…i hadn’t considered the drag-n-drop possibility and finding the actual executable for some ofthese programs is kind of confusing for a ubuntu noob like myself…in windows they’re usually somewhere in the C:/Programs folder but ubuntu is mystifying…
